Managing Aggression and Personal Security (MAPS)

1

“More than a fifth of councillors in a new Local Government Association (LGA) survey said they had received a threat of violence in their role. The LGA research received 1,734 responses from councillors in England and Wales, with 22% reporting that they had been threatened with violence, of which 23% said they received a death threat.

Almost a quarter (23%) of respondents said they had suffered abuse that was serious enough to report to the police.
Overall, 73% of council members reported experiencing abuse or intimidation in their role in the past year.”

Aimed at ‘front-line staff’, this one-day course is suitable for anyone whose role brings them into direct contact with the public, especially in situations where there is the potential for conflict. Not just in enforcement, social services and safeguarding roles, but also manual workers operating on behalf of Social Housing Landlords (SLH) and councils – plumbers, carpenters, electricians and builders.
Our approach offers a multidimensional understanding of personal security, giving attendees the best chance of avoiding ever getting into situations where breakaway techniques are required.

The Personal Security instructor has operated in dozens of countries working in high- intensity, conflict environments in both overt and low-profile roles. He holds both Gracie Survival and British Combat association instructor qualifications and what he teaches has been tested in real time.

The Personal Security course is specifically designed for public servants who, while having to deal with conflict situations with the general public, face unique constraints not encountered by law enforcement or private citizens.

The full course comprises:

The ethics of self-defence – At what point do you enforce a personal security boundary? We teach you ‘decisions points’  – a predetermined boundary at which point you disengage and leave the situation. In a stressful situation, our processing power is reduced and our ability to think clearly and make decisions is compromised. Having decision points allows us to take action (disengage) whilst in a stressful state of emotional arousal or fear.

Self-de-escalation – Tapping/EFT techniques to de-escalate ourselves before we go in to a potential conflict situation (victim/perpetrator interview). Keeping ourselves emotionally regulated allows us to be more effective and have more control over a situation with a potentially aggressive or hostile individual.

Security Reconnaissance – Virtual map studies and extremely basic area surveillance to safely position yourself and vehicle. We have worked with DV advisors who have parked their cars outside victim’s houses only to have the perpetrator turn up and damage the DV advisor’s vehicle, threaten the advisor or take their registration details. We teach attendees how to position a vehicle out of line of sight and detect if they are being followed after the visit.
We teach them to plan safe zones, escape routes and nominated police stations before potentially hazardous visits.

Situational Awareness – The bedrock of your personal security, we teach proven techniques that help raise your awareness of your surroundings and alert you to potential threats before they fully develop. Early recognition of threat is key to either de-escalation or disengagement.

Verbal de-escalation, conflict management  and rapport building techniques –  A conflict situation is often a person ‘running a script’ (and we are too!) We teach pattern interruption – getting them off the script and moving them on to problem solving. A part of this is rapport building in which we teach the Human Intelligence (HUMINT) skills taught to Intelligence Officers.

Threat indicators – As a situation intensifies, the aggressor’s adrenaline and cortisol levels will rise. There are clear physical indicators of this. We teach you to recognise the physical signs in order to prepare for your decision point.

Breakaway Techniques – A last resort, we teach participants to escape from the five most common grabs, an aggressor will use. Hopefully, with the all of the elements above, it should never get to this.

Intelligence-led Operations for enforcement

2

Often seen as an esoteric art, we break down the intelligence-led process down into simple and applicable principles and practices.

Planning your Information (intelligence) Requirements (IRs) – “Computers are useless, they only give answers” Pablo Picasso. Knowing what questions to ask is the basis of your intelligence-led operation “What do I need to know? Where do I get that information/who has it? What assets do I have to collect it?” We start with teaching you how to develop a Priority Information Requirements (PIR) matrix.

Collection plan – Subsequently we teach attendees how draw up a collection plan that will meet those PIRs.

Planning the Debrief – A good debrief will confirm or deny information you already have, confirm the reliability of the source and gather new information. We teach how to plan the debrief in order for maximum information capture.

The Debrief – Unlike a social conversation, a debrief has to be planned and structured for maximum information capture. We teach the correct structure so that the interaction is managed and efficient.

Questioning Techniques
Questions can be open or closed, leading or baited and presumptive and each of these can contaminate the answers if used incorrectly. Our course teaches correct questioning techniques to both gain maximum information capture and build rapport with the subject.

Symptomatic Behavioural Analysis (SBA)
Deception is inherently stressful and when a subject is being deceptive, evasive or omitting relevant detail, they will invariably ‘leak’ signs of that stress. Taught as a standard to Human Intelligence Officers in both the military and civilian environments, we teach participants simple techniques and ‘question framing’ to reveal when it is likely that they are being deceptive.

Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)

3

Understanding sound OSINT practice and procedures will streamline your collection efforts, saving you time and adding a tremendous amount of horsepower to your investigations. Our principle here is “The basics done well”. You don’t have to be an IT expert to start ethically and legally uncovering deeper layers of information.
At the end of our one day course, you will come away with a solid grounding in:
  • Basic Principles of how the internet works.
  • Researching IP addresses.
  • How to identify an IP address.
  • Security.
  • Traceability.
  • Search engines.
  • Search engine optimisation.
  • Basics of efficient searching
  • Social Networking Sites.
  • Searching a specific Social Networking site.
  • Evidentiary Logs.
  • Searching with strings and keywords
  • Image Searching.
  • Reverse Imaging searching.
  • Geo tagging.
  • Searching by tagging information.
  • Email investigations.
  • Intelligence exploitation from Full Header Information.
  • Originator information.

Skill Set

Human Intelligence training for safeguarding and DV.

4

Human Factors leverages the same Human Intelligence (HUMINT) skill set employed by Intelligence Officers to empower, prevent, protect and build partnerships.

Professional Curiosity is the emotional literacy skill of exploring and understanding subtext without accepting assumptions or things at face value. Equally, it involves a systematic and methodical approach to triangulating information in order to fully capture all aspects of a situation.

The course will teach practitioners to understand the motivation of a subject (Perpetrator and Victim), build rapport, debrief (as opposed to interview) and spot both verbal deception and physical stress indicators associated with deception.

Also this course will dramatically improve professional curiosity. Practitioners will receive presentations, written exercises and interactive role play giving them a multi-dimensional understanding of the subject. By the end of the course, attendees will be able to triangulate information to capture a fuller picture and identify areas that require further attention.

Motivation – Reward, Ideology, Coercion and Ego – understanding the deep drivers that
move people to action either abusing someone else or tolerating abuse.

Rapport Building – A foundation skill, rapport building facilitates information exchange, trust and cooperation. Even among deceptive subjects, it will create the conditions for the best possible opportunity for information capture. Rapport building is the keystone to eliciting cooperation in victims who may, through their experiences, be mistrustful of those charged with helping them.

Debriefing – Distinct from an interview, debriefing is another foundation skill. The course will teach practitioners how to:

  • Prepare your Information Requirements Matrix prior to the interview.
  • Detailed Logical and Persistent questioning (DLP).
  • The debriefing process.
  • The tree of knowledge.
  • Questioning Techniques.

Symptomatic Behavioural Analysis (SBA) and Verbal Deception – Deception is stressful and even career criminals will ‘leak’ signs of such stress. Equally, victims will often present in very subtle ways – micro expressions and verbal deception. Being able to observe and
identify such cues and signs will tell you what the person not telling you.
